Hi, Iām Rooh
I make instrumental music (mostly). Guitar-led, with Indian scales and instruments like tabla and flute, something that sits closer to psych rock than anything else. Put it on and see where it takes you.
I grew up in Mumbai. Did my undergrad in Bangalore, moved to Toronto for my studies and have been here a few years now. My time in a Bangalore hostel is where I found my sound. Three years of evening bhajan sessions with friends who had trained in Indian classical. We'd sit together and share what we knew openly. No hierarchy, no gatekeeping, just people learning from each other. That shaped how I think about music and honestly how I think about most things.
I'm drawn to the sounds I grew up listening to. I mix them with my love for psych rock and try to build something in between.
The Prakash EP and the single Implode are the best place to start.
Sounds from Rooh
Alongside the music I run Sounds from Rooh, a live event series in Toronto. Each edition pairs two styles or genres that don't usually share a room and moves through them. The audience arrives for something familiar and leaves having heard something maybe new.
How I Perform
Every set has deliberate space for improvisation. I don't want to go on autopilot and I don't want the audience to feel like they're watching a rehearsal. Some of my favourite shows have been playing live guitar over a DJ set, fully improvising, responding to whatever the DJ is doing in real time. That back and forth is what I'm always looking for.
